Helen Peters and The Straw Hat/Le Chapeau de Paille

This painting hung unremarked for the entire market season, at Cardigan’s Farmers’ Market , beginning Father’s Day weekend. We are now winding down the crafts for another season, with our last day open being September 15th.

Helen Peters was in my mind when I painted this. A dear friend who died  many years ago. But I remember her and her courage. Today was her birthday. She accepted illness and difficulties with dignity, grace… I admired her. But for all others this androgenous figure is merely a receptacle for a straw hat, much needed in the heat of summer 2018.
