Casting off/ Partons

The last rays of the summer sunshine spin on my flowerbeds enticing me to do a last weeding session for 2013. This is the time of the year when that task is motivated by the autumn preparation of the ground for spring bulbs. I have been unable to resist the variegated yellow and red 18” tulips. I also did not listen to my sane inner voice cautioning to plant a dozen. I bought 50!

My Island garden is taking shape after its first season. A number of playful elements add structure and interest. Planting some vegetables and fruit amid the flowers was successful, except for the melon which was nibbled at by a night-time visitor. (No not Ryan, perhaps the hare. So far the red squirrels have kept their distance. I wonder if it is the iron works scaring them off.)

Indeed it is the time to begin to think about bidding farewell to this gentle Island and return to a much more hectic insular life in the cosmopolitan metropolis. Reverting to my alter-ego is a hard transition. Adapting to the noise, the constant light, the absence of wildlife and the music of the sea, takes days, no weeks. But Montreal has its allure and its duty. Therefore this winter will find me immersed in numerous projects and joyous family occasions (more to follow). The only decision left to make now is the departure date.

While there is no urgency, I must cast off from my paradise. As I navigate to Montreal thoughts of all that has passed this summer will fill the time. Much will be uplifting. However the sense of loss and sorrow at Robert’s passing will be accompanying me just as if he were once more in the passenger seat. But buoying my spirits will be the success I have had at the Farmers’ Market with my watercolours and all the great people I met there.

Wishing you all a terrific solstice!
